jeepney-riding always seems to amaze me.
I have had a lot of experiences riding different kinds of jeepneys going to different locations. All through the four years in college, i must say that it is within the bounds of the jeepney that I have learned so much about school and life. Since it was always an hour or so ride from downtown to Mintal, the jeepney-ride was something i look forward to. Whenever i have things to study or stuff to read, i do it in the jeepney, beside people who’s on their way home from the market, nursing students who are excited to go to MIntal for their shift or for people who just need to go somewhere.
the jeepney has always been equated with the Filipino culture. In fact, when foreigners are asked why they want to go to the Philippines, jeepney-riding is one of the things they would gladly want to try out aside from the beautiful weather and scenery that we could offer. The art of jeepney riding by resil mojares is one of the essays that speaks of the Filipino culture through a very familiar cultural practice (the jeppney riding). It shows how jeepney-riding reflects the character of a Filipino. From the simple choice of where to sit inside the jeep, to the diverse culture one can witness inside, to the habit of settling for something less that we (FIlipinos) have beome accustomed to.
The art of jeepney riding is truly something that Filipinos have mastered. We become artists.

It is very true that jeepney riding could be quite useful sometimes. Since you can’t get to your destination any faster if you ride on a jeepney, you could get undone things done there. But I don’t usually do it because reading or studying in a moving vehicle would make me dizzy. What I usually do is daydream and oftentimes, I plan for my future, or just for anything. And yes, ideas come out without too much strain or pressure. Good thing I could always say “lugar lang or diri lang” at the right moment and place. And as i stoop down the jeepney, I go back to reality again, enough of daydreaming.
