take my word for it : a poem by a Singaporean Writer

Posted by lysette on June 11th, 2007

I could love you.

Wrap a metaphor around your finger.

Punctuate each embrace,

take your gaze in the lines

of my hand and lead it to

my mouthing sweet nothing lips.

Stroke you hair with syllables

And tie it in parentheses

enunciate each advance with a alliteration

and bring you to bed with a preposition.

I’d love to love you.

The rustle of hair as i turn your face,

admire the vignette of a dimple,

the eyes that stray out of the margins

and justify my close reading

of your smile like a simile;

This is translation — semaphore

Of lip, eyelash, stray strand and teeth

Of giddiness of my tonue in your cheeck.

A poem i read from one of my favorite book of poetry collections. the book cover was what attracted me first when i saw it in the shelf stuck between two other big books because of its purplish cover and it’s title: a book of love: a collection of love poems by different Asean writers. When i sifted through the book, i ran across this poem that speaks about love in the most English way possible. it was amusing at first because of the use of the different terms we usually use in writing an english composition, but when you go on reading it and reading it once more, you’d realize that it is really about love and its complexities. the tone of the poem is very light that it reflects the light feeling one has when he/she is in-love. it’s like you’re riding on a cloud floating with the stars in the sky, very similar to the feeling of love and yet the complexity of the terms used adds the thrill to that loving feeling.

It is very fun to read. It sounds so simple. I first thought that it was made beacause of the love for writing (as greatly shown by the terms used in writing). But later, I realized that it’s trying to talk about the complexities of love.
    It’s a good poem.

i love the poem. i love to experience the experience of the subject of the poem.even though its good, when i will compare it to poems in a UP folio, still our isko and iska writer manifest a better writing styles. im not biased, i guessed so. im just telling the truth. read a UP folio, e.g. a UPLB one, then you will find out im right.

The poem is good.It is colored with figures of speech. Well maybe that could be the feelings of people who are in love. I’ll just see and wait. :)

i find this poem somewhat funny.(sorry…)
funny ,because i can’t imagine a person in a relationship will think and act in this way..I can’t stop myself to smile.. it’s pretty obvious that the person in the peom
is madly in love.. i now believe that a person who is in love turns corny…

The poem was very much into love and was very descriptive… The poet was really good in English even though he’s a Singaporean. The poet used a lot of figures of speech.

I definitely love the poem even though I was not able to understand right away some of the words used. Love is the greatest gift that a person can give. It covers all life’s aspects. To be love in return is the greatest give a person can receive. Because it satisfies our emotions and will definitely give us the feeling of happiness like no other things can.

  • leah said:

it speaks about love but one will not be able to feel it. it doesn’t depict the deep, true meanig of love (if it really does exist).personally, i did not feel the love that the author wants his readers to feel during and after i read the poem.
